Computational Construction Series Part 6: EKL Scripting for Bus Path Evaluation

It has been a while since we contributed to our computational construction series so here goes. Here’s the use case: One of our projects is a mixed use residential project on top of a podium structure that has an on-grade bus terminal below. We needed to quickly find a way to verify bus paths via simulation and wanted to build a tool that was reusable to other types of use cases. Using CATIA Template Designer on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform we created this tool with EKL scripting completely using out of the box functionality.

To instantiate the tool you need to create an input curve that represents a path that you wish the vehicle to take. The tool will compute the path that the rear axle will take, then places the vehicle’s front axle on the user’s input curve and the rear axle on the computed rear axle path line. The motion of the vehicle can be simulated by moving it along the guide curves with a built in Mechanism Player. The tool is linked to a catalog of vehicles therefore with a drop down menu inside the tool, it is possible to change the vehicle and the tool will recalculate the axles path lines automatically for the specified vehicle.

We like this one because its a living tool that we can continue to reuse for multiple projects, uses case, etc.
